carefree & adventurous
Choose Your Location
The location of your milestone session is up to you! Most of my clients love outdoor, open air environments where wide-open spaces create divine light. Others enjoy a more intimate indoor space inside their home or my natural light studio. How about a destination? I've been all around the world - let me hop on your vaca for a day or we can explore a new location together!
Tips: Brainstorm unique locations that you might have special access to. Maybe someone in your professional network can secure a location that would otherwise be off-limits (a beautiful private estate, resort, family ranch, upscale hotel, airplane hangar, or a rooftop view). The sky is the limit & you never know until you ask!
DRESS IT UP
Want your photos to look more editorial? Bring a little extra something with you! Fresh flowers bring an extra “wow” factor to just about everything, especially when they’re attached to something else, like a bicycle basket, tree swing, tent, picnic basket, balloons, or car bumper. Whether you want to incorporate larger items like classic cars or bikes, or smaller ones like blankets or hats, even one item could be fun to make your session more unique!
Don't have any props in mind? I have wooden chairs, wicker baskets, & dough bowls that you can request at no extra charge. However, I really enjoy using props that have a special meaning to you. Think how fun it would be to incorporate heirloom items into your milestone shoot (like Grandma's old baby chair)!
Select softer, lighter tones & avoid neon colors. They will reflect on your skin & you'll end up discolored. The camera loves shades of soft pink, red, orange & muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown & white. Feel free to vary the shades of the colors, too. That softer, moody, color palette fits beautifully into a natural environment & can easily be paired in so many different ways.

I recommend that you DO NOT get a spray tan before your session, even a few days prior, because it tends to photograph orange even when it’s applied subtly and by a professional.
Choosing flattering silhouettes & colors that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos.
Have you thought about rocking a romantic gown, tulle skirt, or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up!
Three quarter-length sleeves create an awesome slimming effect on all arms. You could also bring a cute jacket, blazer or cardigan along, too.
High heels elongate women's legs making us look fabulous! Closed-toes heels in particular look great on camera because they carry out the line of your leg all the way down to your toe.
QUICK TIP: Bring a pair of easy-to-kick-off flats to wear when moving from place to place in between photos. Your feet will thank you later!
Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can bring some extra dimension to your images. Choose one or two that don’t compete for attention. Fresh florals in a crown can be a really romantic touch for you or your daughters as well.
Professional hair & makeup is on most of my clients’ checklists because it looks amazing on camera & removes the stress of getting ready on your own. This is the time to treat yourself!

Don't forget the simple things like touch ups on shaving (you will see stubble even if blonde) & iron / steam your clothes!
Dapper & debonaire never go out of style. Long, fitted pants & closed toe shoes are the most sophisticated & masculine looks for men. Further, many of my guys love to mix a suit coat, blazer, or sport coat with a different pant color. It adds some extra visual interest & breaks up the color tones. I'm a big fan of this fresh take on a timeless classic!
Solid shades of gray or navy are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye. I also recommend staying away from graphics & logos.
Layers on men look great on camera, so even when it’s hot outside, an hour of discomfort for photos that will last you both a lifetime. Blazers, vests and coats will level up any look.
Brown leather dress shoes compliment almost every look. Ties, bowties, pocket squares, colored socks, belts, tie clips, suspenders, vests & watches are sharp complements to any outfit for men and boys alike.
fashion for a group
Your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette & wardrobe pieces coordinate, not match. The goal is for each person to have their own dominant color. This will highlight each personality individually. Then, you can use small splashes of colors from the other family member's dominant colors to add depth to the composition. Most of my moms choose their outfit first & then build the rest of the family’s outfits around theirs.
Mom (dominant color: blush) Wear a blush dress, nude heels, & soft blue earrings.
Dad (dominant color: navy) Wear a navy coat with a white button-down, gray pants, brown leather shoes & a blush pocket square.
Daughter (dominant color: soft blue) Wear a soft blue top with white tulle skirt.
Son (dominant color: white) Wear light beige pants with navy suspenders & a white button down.
Multiple Children: Don’t feel like you need to put them all in the same type of outfit. For example, one of your daughters could wear a dress & flats, while the other wears a skirt & boots. One of your sons could wear a bowtie, while the other one wears suspenders. Mixing up the wardrobe pieces will bring a great visual interest to the photos.
SEE YOU SOON!
I know I just gave you a lot to think about - so take your time! I created this guide to help make your lifestyle session experience something you’ll look back fondly on for years to come. At the end of the day, the location you choose & the outfits you select won’t matter nearly as much as the memories you capture together. I want your session to be a time for you to just enjoy being yourself. Have fun together. Giggle a lot. And I’ll take care of the rest!
